Why the wrong answer is part of the design

A trick-question puzzle has a structural problem: if the obvious answer is punished, players learn to distrust the game rather than to think. Tricky Bits resolves this by making the decoy safe and informative. Trying the obvious move costs a second, and the failure animation is written to explain the rule the level was actually testing.

That turns the decoy into the tutorial. You are not guessing at what the designer wanted; you are being shown the hidden rule by the very act of falling for it. Levels resolve in under a minute once the real rule is visible, which keeps the loop closer to a riddle than a grind.

For players who would rather find the answer cold, solving without touching the decoy earns a Clean Aha star — an optional target that rewards insight without penalising the ordinary route.

Anything on screen can be a prop

The central habit the game teaches is to stop treating the frame as neutral. Anything on screen can be part of the puzzle, including elements that look like interface. Once that assumption goes, scenes that appeared to have one interactive object turn out to have several.

Your inputs are broader than they first appear too: a level might be solved by a tap, a drag, a peel, or by rotating the entire stage. When a scene seems to have no answer, the usual reason is an untried verb rather than an unnoticed object.
